Mountain Bike Wheels

Tubeless mountain bike wheels improve traction and control in adverse weather and rugged terrain whilst eliminating pinched flats and problems associated with standard tub tyres. UST (Universal Standard for Tubeless) cycle wheels were developed in a joint industry effort between Mavic, Michelin and several other manufactures with an emphasis on mountain bike applications. Today, a number of mainstream bicycle and tyre manufacturers, including Kendra, Shimano and Bontrager, offer a range of tubeless mountain bike wheels and specialty tyres.

Tubeless mountain bike wheels are built with an airtight tyre channel and a rim-mount valve rather an inner tube valve. Tyre carcasses are mounted directly onto the wheel using a self-healing sealant inside and a latex or silicone bead along the tyre edge. A tight seal is achieved by adding pressure with a high-powered air compressor or CO2 cartridge. Although tubeless mountain bike wheels are designed for use with tubeless tyres that contain an integrated liner, some riders pair their tubeless wheels with standard tub tyre carcasses for maximum weight reduction.

After the initial tyre installation, tubeless wheels have a number of benefits for the off-road mountain biker and trail rider. With tubeless wheels, you’ll never have another pinched flat from your rim cutting the inner tube. Tubeless riders can comfortably lower their air pressure by 10 psi or more for a softer ride on rugged terrain. Self-healing sealants are messy, but they provide some great benefits after punctures. Sealant often spews dramatically from tubeless tyres as air is forced through puncture wounds. In most cases, the sealant will form a plug in the hole allowing you to continue your ride or at least arrive safely back at your home base without damaging your rims or calling a taxi.

For most riders, tubeless mountain bike wheels are an after-market upgrade although some high-end manufacturers offer tubeless wheel with new purchases. Typical start-up costs range from £134 per wheel to £1.000 or more for carbon fibre wheels featuring ceramic bearings and a deluxe hub. Mid-range tubeless wheel sets for mountain bikes can be purchased for roughly £400-500, including hubs. Tubeless tyres are more expensive than standard tyres ranging anywhere from £30 to £100 per tyre. However there’s no need to purchase secondary inner tubes. Tubeless mountain bike wheels are ideal for riders seeking a safe tyre and wheel solution with traction and performance-enhancing capabilities in the harshest terrain.
