Tubeless mountain bike wheels improve traction and control in adverse weather and rugged terrain whilst eliminating pinched flats and problems associated with standard tub tyres. UST (Universal Standard for Tubeless) cycle wheels were developed in a joint industry effort between Mavic, Michelin and several other manufactures with an emphasis on mountain bike applications. Today, a number of mainstream bicycle and tyre manufacturers, including Kendra, Shimano and Bontrager, offer a range of tubeless mountain bike wheels and specialty tyres.

Tubeless mountain bike wheels are built with an airtight tyre channel and a rim-mount valve rather an inner tube valve. Tyre carcasses are mounted directly onto the wheel using a self-healing sealant inside and a latex or silicone bead along the tyre edge. A tight seal is achieved by adding pressure with a high-powered air compressor or CO2 cartridge. Although tubeless mountain bike wheels are designed for use with tubeless tyres that contain an integrated liner, some riders pair their tubeless wheels with standard tub tyre carcasses for maximum weight reduction.

After the initial tyre installation, tubeless wheels have a number of benefits for the off-road mountain biker and trail rider. With tubeless wheels, you’ll never have another pinched flat from your rim cutting the inner tube. Tubeless riders can comfortably lower their air pressure by 10 psi or more for a softer ride on rugged terrain. Self-healing sealants are messy, but they provide some great benefits after punctures. Sealant often spews dramatically from tubeless tyres as air is forced through puncture wounds. In most cases, the sealant will form a plug in the hole allowing you to continue your ride or at least arrive safely back at your home base without damaging your rims or calling a taxi.

For most riders, tubeless mountain bike wheels are an after-market upgrade although some high-end manufacturers offer tubeless wheel with new purchases. Typical start-up costs range from £134 per wheel to £1.000 or more for carbon fibre wheels featuring ceramic bearings and a deluxe hub. Mid-range tubeless wheel sets for mountain bikes can be purchased for roughly £400-500, including hubs. Tubeless tyres are more expensive than standard tyres ranging anywhere from £30 to £100 per tyre. However there’s no need to purchase secondary inner tubes. Mountain biking is a time honored and active sport that involves making the best use of a bike’s mass. Since it involves climbing steep inclines, maneuvering around objects on short notice, and various similar activities, the weight of a bike is one of the key factors in its handling. Realizing this, wheel manufacturers have developed extremely lightweight MTB wheels that can significantly reduce the weight of a mountain bike.

Advantages of Lightweight MTB Wheels

Light wheels are advantageous for all the reasons one might suspect. The following are a few situations in which lighter wheels might come in handy.

Jumps

If you’re the sort of mountain biker who likes to “get air” a lighter bike can allow you to go higher and farther. This only stands to reason. The less weight you have to get off the ground, the better air you can potentially get. Things like the frame also factor in to the weight of a bike, but light wheels are a good place to start.
That said, there are some important safety precautions regarding wheels and jumping or other high energy MTB activities, and they are discussed below.

Uphill Riding

There are also obvious advantages to using lightweight MTB wheels when doing uphill riding. Lightweight wheels help a rider to get that speed advantage even though gravity is against them. Since there is some extra weight lost by using the light wheels, the biker can put the bike into higher gear and get more power as he or she ascends.

Fast Maneuvering

Either on level terrain or going downhill, lightweight MTB wheels can help with fast maneuvering. A lighter bike responds more quickly. A lighter touch to the handlebars is sufficient to make the bike turn, and in situations where fast turning is required, even an extra tenth of a second can make a difference.

Cautionary Considerations

You need to exercise caution when you move on the basis of weight reduction in your MTB buying and outfitting strategies. The one thing that you can (even unwittingly) sacrifice in your quest to shave as many grams as possible off the weight of a bike is durability and safety. The following are a few considerations to keep in mind so that you don’t make this mistake:

Weight Ratio

You need to have an appropriate weight ratio between you and your mountain bike. Lighter wheels often have at least some reduction in strength and impact resistance as a tradeoff. If you’re heavy than is appropriate in comparison to the lightness of your wheels and bike in general, you can end up bending the wheels and possibly having an accident. Consult your bicycle dealer about the weight ratio limitations on any lightweight MTB wheels you but.

Impact Resistance

Similarly, lightweight MTB wheels may have slightly less impact resistance. So if you’re doing things like jumps or rough downhill riding, this can increase accident risk. The last thing you want is for a wheel to give out when you’re in the middle of a high speed, high impact situation. Again, consult your dealer or the manufacturer concerning the impact performance capabilities of any wheel you buy, and take this information seriously.

Tire and Rim Fit

It’s possible to put a tire of inappropriate width on a lightweight wheel rim. This is again a dangerous situation, because the tire can peel off at high speed or in the event of an impact. So know what the right tire size is for the rim you have purchased.

Lightweight MTB wheels are fine if used properly. But make sure you know what you’re doing when using them. Get all the relevant information necessary to prevent accidents and insure an enjoyable mountain biking experience.

The most common colour for mountain bike wheels is black. As a matter of fact, this is the most common colour for wheels on any type of bicycle. Carbon wheels are a big investment on your bike. They cost much more than traditional steel wheels, but their incredibly light weight makes them worth every penny. In this post I want to share with you how to make sure they last a long time, as well as one of the best sets of mountain bike wheels on the market.

It’s extremely important to remember that while carbon is very strong, it doesn’t take impact well. Improperly clamping your carbon wheels in a repair stand can cause some major damage. Also, much of the damage can’t even be seen, so you have to do everything you can to protect it while not riding. If you are concerned that your wheels may be damaged, have a pro inspect them. Carbon wheels can give out without warning when they are compromised!

Regular cleaning and maintenance of your wheels is the same as steel. Clean them with soap, water, and a soft cloth or towel. Be sure to thoroughly dry them off.

The biggest maintenance issue with carbon wheels is flat tires. When you ride on carbon, a flat tube is more than a pain in the butt, it risks ruining your wheel. As soon as you notice that you’re low on air, get off the bike! These wheels aren’t designed to take any sort of abuse without an inflated tire.

Also, be sure to check spoke tension frequently. Most carbon wheels are very tall, which means that spokes can almost come off before you notice that they are loose. Check them before and after every ride.

Quite possible the most legendary wheel for all-mountain/downhill/freeride – the adapatability, legendary strength and upgraded reliability of these wheels shines through.
